Ľ Step 3: Watering the crops
Organic farmers supply their cotton with water, but they use less of it than non-organic farmers do. This is because natural soil is better able to retain water. Since no chemicals are used, this also means that when water runs off the crops into nearby streams and rivers, it is not toxic for the animals or humans who may be drinking it downstream.
Ľ Step 4: Helping the cotton grow
Farmers keep a close eye on their cotton, using natural methods to keep pesky weeds and insects away. They get rid of weeds by hand or machine, and they eliminate pests by sprinkling natural deterrents like chili and garlic.
Ľ Step 5: Harvesting the cotton
Workers pick their cotton by hand or with the help of a machine. Either way, their efforts are monitored by independent agencies to ensure good working hours and conditions.
Ľ Step 6: Processing the cotton
Before the cotton moves along to the cotton gin (thatís the place itís processed), the gin is cleaned to make sure nothing contaminates the purity of the organic cotton. This also ensures no chemicals end up on your dinner table, since cotton byproducts like oil are used in many foods today.
Ľ Step 7: From cotton to yarn
In the country where the cotton is grown and harvested, workers now spin it into soft and luxurious yarns that are 100% organic. These are then imported to our Canadian warehouse.
Ľ Step 8: Off to the knitters
Now on North American soil, four different types of cotton yarn combined with some new fibers like polyester are turned into a variety of fabrics. These are then used in our Me to We: Style line to create a variety of textures and blends.
Ľ Step 9: Dipped in colour
Our organic fabrics now begin their journey into colour. They are dyed in Canada, using the safest and most advanced environmentally friendly practices in the country. Care and attention are at a premium during this process to protect our water and the environment.
