Thomas Hogan is an Ojibway artist who paints in the Woodland-style first developed by the world renowned artist, Norval Morrisseau.
Tom’s vibrant paintings reflect both his knowledge of traditional Aboriginal mythology and his personal journey. Each work is a powerful testament to his spirit’s ability to transcend the often difficult realities of the human condition.
Jo-Ann Oosterman had the honour of becoming Tom’s art agent in 2005, and it is her pleasure to share these original Tom Hogan paintings with us.
Tom and Jo-Ann first met in 1998, when she coordinated an art group for people who were homeless. Tom became a faithful member of this group, and over the years he has shared his story with her. Tom spent most of his life without a real home, living in foster homes as a child and then in shelters or on the streets, as an adult. Despite this adversity Tom’s capacity for kindness, his ability to forgive and his sense of irony have not been lost.
Me to We Style came across Tom’s paintings and fell in love with them, then after hearing his story was committed to working with him and showing who they could the talent and beauty he posses. Tom has always wanted to see his paintings on t-shirts and we have done just that! This painting entitled “UNITED” captures the spirit of our collaboration. It is printed on a bright orange t-shirt to represent the beauty and colourful nature of aboriginal art and has been created to help celebrate June 21st, National Aboriginal Day, a celebration of our country’s diverse First Nation’s cultures.
